Distribution Network Power System (Fault Diagnosis)

Introduction

Distribution systems are prone to fault occurrences due to various reasons, such as lightning strikes, human error and failure of components. These phenomena affect the customers’ access to power and require repairs to be done to restore their supply.

This module covers the diagnosis of fault occurrences and the restoration of supply. Through theoretical, practical ,and simulation training, participants will leave the 3 day course with the knowledge and the skills needed to perform fault diagnosis.

Objective

At the end of the course, participants will be:

  • Knowledgeable on the protective system, protective scheme and protective equipment in a 33kV Distribution Network
  • Able to diagnose different types of faults in the 33kV Distribution Network
  • Recognise the function, type, device code and numbering of protection relays in the Main Distribution Substation
  • Remember the TNBD Work Instruction & Circulars related to post breakdown, isolation of faulted circuit and restoration of supply

Agenda

Day 1

Application of Distribution Network Protection

  • Common 33kV Feeder protection scheme and relays used
  • Common 33/11kV power transformer protection scheme and relays
  • Main & Back-up protection for Feeder and Transformers
  • Unit & Non-Unit protection
  • Voltage & Current balanced scheme
  • The behaviour of Feeder Unit protection if fed from one end or both ends
  • The necessity for Back-up Protection
  • Auto Re-closer scheme with shots and lockout
  • Inter trip scheme
  • Trip circuit supervision

Given Single Line Diagram of 33kV Simulator

  • Trainees fill up the type, device code & numbering of relays used for each Feeder and Transformer protection
Day 2

Fault Diagnosis

  • Trainees are divided into groups and given fault scenarios at the simulator
  • Practical session on tripping, fault diagnosis, reporting, isolation and restoration of supply
Day 3

Presentation, Diagnosis & Discussion

  • Analysis of the tripping, fault diagnosis, reporting, isolation of faulted circuit and restoration of supply as per Energy Commission Malaysia and TNBD Certification system which includes Job Sheet, Sanction, Authorization and Permit-to-Work forms.

What people say?

It was a perfect match seeing that i need to work on my confidence.I actually learnt more skills that is needed for me to be able to develop training programs.

The course definitely helped in improving concepts. It would be great if you add more examples of templates for Training evaluation. This would help in creating better sheets in future. Thanks
