Overview:

In an electrical power system, switchgear is the combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses or circuit breakers used to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment. Switchgear is used both to de-energize equipment to allow work to be done and to clear faults downstream. This type of equipment is directly linked to the reliability of the electricity supply.

Switchgears in substations are located on both the high-voltage and low-voltage side of large power transformers. The switchgear on the low-voltage side of the transformers may be located in a building, with medium-voltage circuit breakers for distribution circuits, along with metering, control, and protection equipment.

In this five days course the participants will be taught on the fundamentals of the switchgears and also on the maintenance expect. They will involve in hand-on sessions as well.

Tower Top Inspection (TTI) work on high voltage transmission lines 500/275/132 kV will be done without any outages. It includes examination of all hardware and accessories tower for identifying any problems or damage done every four years, or annually for crossing tower.

Hot stick (ground potential) work when the lineman is at ground potential in the tower or standing on a non-insulated platform or ladder and performing work with tools fixed at the end of insulated hand held sticks maintaining a specified working distance fixed by line voltage.

Barehand (line potential) work when the lineman is in direct contact with the energized component. The lineman shall wear at all-time special conductive cloths and shall respect working distance either from the line or from the ground potential.

Overview:
The power transformer has a significant role in power delivery system. As it is critical and expensive component, its safe operation with good reliability is deemed important by the utilities. In many utilities, a transformer serves either close to or beyond its design life (30-40 years). The majority of ageing assets are operated on full load with no significant condition assessment. Due to the complexity of the asset, its insulation undergoes electrical, thermal, mechanical and chemical stresses. The assets fails when its insulation system cannot withstand the designed electrical and thermal stresses. Material with different dielectric properties (solids and gases) within the insulation system discharge energy and may lead to breakdown. With other important components like the Bushing and On Load Tap Changer require attention in order to get full lifetime.

Many transformers are reported to fail before reaching to their design life. Technical assessment based on critical component monitoring and diagnostics is vital for both new and ageing assets this course presents transformer assessment criteria and case study of a power transformer failure.
